The Product Managers who made YouTube a success

Conceptualization and Founding

The story of YouTube began in early 2005 when Chad Hurley and Steve Chen, both former PayPal employees, noticed the lack of a user-friendly platform for sharing videos online. Inspired by the difficulties they faced in uploading and sharing videos, they envisioned a platform that would simplify the process. Additionally, they collaborated with influential bloggers and online communities to spread the word about YouTube.

  • Viral Content and Sharing: YouTube's founders recognized the power of viral content in driving user engagement and attracting new users. They encouraged users to share interesting and entertaining videos with their friends and networks. The "Share" feature on YouTube made it easy for users to send video links via email, instant messaging, and later through social media platforms.

    An amazing insight from Global Media Insight says, that every minute 500 hours of video are uploaded on YouTube, equivalent to about 300,000 hours per day. This is about 34 years of content added every day 🤯!!!

    According to Statista, it would take around 17,810 years of consecutive video watching, IF people decided to stop uploading new videos in the meantime 🤯!!!

    YouTube provides various monetization options for creators, including advertising revenue, channel memberships, merchandise sales, sponsored content, and crowdfunding. These opportunities empower creators to turn their passion into sustainable livelihoods.

  • YouTube as a Cultural Phenomenon:

    Deeply ingrained in popular culture, YouTube influences entertainment, music, and internet trends. It fosters viral videos, memorable moments, and influential movements, shaping contemporary digital culture.

  • Expansion into Live Streaming and Gaming:

    Acknowledging the popularity of live streaming and gaming, YouTube introduced offerings like YouTube Live and YouTube Gaming. These platforms allow creators to broadcast live events, concerts, gaming sessions, and esports coverage.

    As YouTube grew, it addressed content moderation challenges through measures targeting copyright infringement, hate speech, and harmful content. Utilizing algorithms and human moderation teams, YouTube maintains a safe and inclusive environment for users.

    A notable incident occurred in 2007 when a video of a teenager being bullied went viral on YouTube. The company faced backlash for not removing the video sooner and for its overall lack of oversight of UGC. This incident highlighted the need for more robust content moderation policies and procedures.

    The company has implemented a number of measures to identify and remove harmful content, including:

    • Automating content detection: YouTube uses a combination of machine learning and human review to identify and remove videos that violate its policies.

    • Partnering with trusted organizations: YouTube partners with a number of organizations, including child protection groups and anti-hate speech organizations, to help identify and remove harmful content.
