The reinvention of Bing that runs with GPT-4
Bing recently reinvented itself and partnered with Open AI's GPT-4. Let's see if its worth it.
Bing is a search engine developed by Microsoft that was launched in 2009. Since its launch, Bing has become one of the most popular search engines worldwide, with millions of users.
In March this year, it announced its partnership with Open AI, allowing Bing to run with GPT-4. The search engine has now become powerful and more intelligent. From answering questions to writing e-books, Bing does it all!
Looking back at Bingâs journeyâŚ
Bing was launched in 2009 by Microsoft and has since become one of the most popular search engines among millions.
While it came power-packed with competitive features it has always struggled to outdo its biggest competitor - the well-known Google. The competition has been brutal ever since the launch.
However, both have their strengths and weaknesses. Today, it seems very difficult to place a finger on what is different. Nevertheless, both have gained good attention in the market and are here to stay.
The Bing Re-invention
Bing hit the headlines recently when it announced it will run with the all-new GPT-4! ChatGPT (GPT-3.5) is known to be the pinnacle of the success of artificial intelligence in the tech world. Its intelligence has made businesses profit unimaginably. Moreover, it has become the reason for manyâs rags-to-riches stories.
What on Earth is ChatGPT?
ChatGPT is an artificial intelligence language model developed by OpenAI, based on the GPT (Generative Pre-trained Transformer) architecture. As a language model, ChatGPT has been trained on a massive amount of text data and is capable of generating human-like responses to natural language inputs.
ChatGPT can be used for a variety of applications, such as chatbots, virtual assistants, and language translation services. It has been designed to understand and respond to a wide range of inputs in a way that is natural and informative.
Okay, so what is GPT-4?
What is GPT-4?
GPT-4 is the next iteration of OpenAI's GPT (Generative Pre-trained Transformer) language model, which is designed to process natural language inputs and generate human-like responses.
When having a casual conversation, it may be difficult to discern the differences between GPT-3.5 and GPT-4. However, as the complexity of the task increases, the disparities become more apparent. GPT-4 is capable of handling more intricate instructions, is more dependable, and possesses greater creativity than GPT-3.5.
Now that we know what is Bing and GPT-4 the partnership now makes some sense. However, it is time for some testing. Let us look at the experience for ourselves!
Exploring the Re-invented User Experience of Bing
I installed Bing on my Android and going to use it for the first time in 10 years. Let me walk you through every step of the user journey of Bing and state your experiences and opinions.
1. Getting Started
The Bing Welcome Screen
#1 The very first page the user sees, and no mention of the Bing search or GPT-4 integration?! Weird!
#2 Honestly, I saw that button AFTER I clicked the screenshot! The welcome screen could do a lot better!
TIP:
User Assurance & Confirmation
Always let your users know that they would find what they came looking for. For example, here, I downloaded Bing because it was listed by the name âBing with GPT-4â on the PlayStore.
Moving on, I click âGet Startedâ.
2. Wallpaper Gallery
Bing Wallpaper Gallery
Again, I am confused! Whatâs with all these wallpapers? Ugh! And in the âAppsâ tab?
TIP:
Prioritization of Flows
Donât let your users wander off from their goal. When users wander off from their goals, they wander off from the goals youâre trying to achieve! For example, the users didnt come looking to explore the variety of wallpapers Bing has to offer! They came for an advanced search experience.
Moreover, the user is landed on the âAppsâ tab which is the last tab. This step could come after âHomeâ and âNewsâ.
Meh, am just jumping to the âHomeâ tab on my own.
3. Home
Bing Home Tab
Wow, a nice and focused search box! No distractions and that background image is so soothing.
And look! A nudge to use the Bing AI copilot. The feature looks powerful - create images, poems, summarize articles - I wonder what the quality would be like. Is this the GPT-4 integration theyâre talking about? I guess, yes.
TIP:
Co-branding
The user would have been more motivated if Bing used the space to co-brand. For example, a small muted text on the search box âPowered by GPT-4â would excite the user more, for two things:
1. To checkout how the all-new GPT-4 works
2. To explore any unique features to Bing when integrated with GPT-4
4. Bing AI Search
Bing AI Search
A nice and clean UI with clear directions. Oh, and I can even explore whatâs trending. Seems like I have missed out on a lot latelyâŚ
I can even hide these suggestions.
Hide You might like
Oh no! Why canât they just keep that eye icon there always, so I can on it back? Now I have to go all the way into Settings!
It is so easy to do a private search! I simply need to press the toggle button. Let me check it out real quick.
Bing AI Search (Private)
Letâs do a quick search before I go check out the chat tab.
Typing Search Terms
I can initiate a chat for the same search, nice. But first, I have to know whenâs the iPhone 15 coming in - thru search!
Bing Search Results
Whoa! Did I just receive coins? The search experience seems ordinary and nothing new.
Letâs jump to chat now!
5. Bing AI Chat
Bing AI Chat
Oh, same interface! I thought I mistakenly landed on the search tab again. HmmâŚ
TIP:
Differentiation
It is best to differentiate interfaces when the userâs objectives of the actions may differ. For example, here users who do a chat have different objectives than those that choose to search. Hence, the differentiation should be outlined.
This will help users stay focused on completing their actions rather than getting distracted.
Letâs begin the chat with a suggested textâŚ
Bing AI Chat Interface
It is taking too long to load! I can choose what type of conversation I want to have, nice!
BUT WHY SHOULD I LOG IN AGAIN!! I already did that đĄ
TIP:
Avoid Repetitive Actions
Never make your users do repetitive actions especially when it is time-consuming. Here, the user had already connected their account to Microsoft. However, it requires them to login again.
Thatâs it for this case study!
Summary
Overall, the Bing experience of GPT-4 powered search, and chat was pleasant and a few areas could see some improvements. Bing is decently successful and has great potential to grow.
